forum accronyms

Post FORUM SPECIFIC questions here: Such as, "HELP, I can't keep logged in for more than one session" etc... Not general help questions such as "my car won't start". You get the idea?

Technology acronyms

SC - supercharger (a positive displacement method of forced induction)
BITURBO - two identical spec turbochargers (one on each bank of a Vee engine - all hail the original Audi RS6  )
TDI - (all capitals) in VW Group speak is Turbocharged Direct Injection (the word diesel never entered the fray in this acronym)
SDI - Suction Direct Injection (like a TDI, but minus a turbo)
VP - Vertelier Pumpe (german) a distributor-type diesel injector pump
PD - Pumpe Duse (german) aka 'unit injector' - a combined fuel injector and high pressure pump (must only use 505.05, 506.05, or 507.00 engine oils)
CR - 'common rail' - can be used on both petrol and diesel engines
IC - intercooler
SMIC - side-mounted intercooler
FMIC - front-mounted intercooler
TMIC - top=mounted intercooler (for the Scooby rice burners)
FI - fuel injection (rarely used)
CFI - central fuel injection (old skool - a single fuel injector mounted inside what often looks like a carburettor throttle body)
SPI - same as CFI
SMPI - sequential multi-point injection (where each injector energises individually)
DI - direct injection (the fuel is squirted directly into the combustion chamber, rather than inlet port or manifold sited injectors)
GDI - gasoline direct injection (developed by Mitsubishi, forerunner to FSI)
FSI - Fuel Stratified Injection - a specific ultra high pressure direct injection, with homogenous mixing, and lean burn (the 'Stratified' bit) ability - the latter disabled on Yank motors due to their shyte fuels
TFSI - Turbocharged Fuel Stratified Injection - as FSI, but with a turbo!
TSI - originally, Twincharger Stratified Injection (the 1.4 petrol with a turbo and a supercharger), latterly VW speak for TFSI (Audi still use the full TFSI)
