Belt or timing chain?

My 15 plate Polo 1.4TDI (105PS) is out of warranty now. It was purchased a year ago under Das WeltAuto, so had a few things done. One question, and importantly I was told by the selling garage (VW franchise) in south of Scotland it had a timing chain. So surprised when today I had an email from local VW dealer saying it's due a timing belt and were quoting £494. Bit pi$$ed off if I'm honest as could do without that additional cost.

Car is 6C model, 66kw engine. Am I right thinking it is indeed a belt? Only 1.2 petrol engine and 1.8 GTI was chain drive?

Hi,

I believe that the 6c polos moved away from chains due to their reliabaility issues, so if yours is a 6C, you should have a belt not a chain, you can also visually see it.

One think to note, VW announced after the failure of the chain that the 6c's Belt is lifetime, i have a 6C and have been to 3 garages, All told me that on the system the car doesnt get the belt changed until atleaste 250-270k km, i could be wrong but this i the information i was provided with.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Tex. I do believe it's a belt. My experience of belts on VAG cars is 5 years and 80k miles on 6 cylinder cars or 5 years and 60k miles on 4 cylinder cars. I did read the 5 years and 140k miles, but think that's on 1.2TDI, however not convinced. Nigh impossible visually check them. Auto transmission, driving style and environmental factors all play their part. Will look to get the toothed belt, water pump and auxiliary drive belt changed. Peace of mind and all that.
