Tuner Bolts

Post by Craig 6r »

Hi..I have just bought some new aftermarket wheels for my 6r Polo Gti...I need to buy some new locking nuts, I need to get tuner ones . I was looking at some McGard ones but the thread length is 29.5mm,does anyone know if they will be ok for my car.
Any help will be appreciated.....

My plan has always been to check the thread projection from the factory fitted wheels when fitted with the factory fitted bolts, and buy suitable type and length of bolts for the aftermarket wheels.

My older daughter's Leon Cupra was treated to a set of aftermarket wheels for winter use, and the supplied bolts were, in my mind, too long, so I bought a set of suitable length bolts to use instead of the ones supplied by the wheel supplier - I did that without trying and seeing if she would get away with using these longer bolts, that in my mind/world is the way to avoid any problems.

Many people will, no doubt just fit what is supplied and blame others when/if it causes problems - these wheel suppliers sell wheel sets to fit many cars and so, I'm guessing, hold as small a selection of "bolts to suit" as they can get away with.

Edit:- I have read some notes that I made at the time I was checking these things, the factory alloys and bolts end up with a threaded section of 18mm projecting out from the wheels, the factory bolts are 27mm long(threaded section), the wheel bolts supplied as part of the wheels kit were 33mm, so maybe I had more reason to want to get some shorter ones, which ended up needing to be 27mm. I'd think that your extra 2.5mm will not cause any problems. Remember it is only the threaded part projecting through the back of the wheel that is the important bit wrt bolt length, plus make sure that you are getting the correct "seat profile" version, ie OEM is conical seat aftermarket is mainly tapered seat.

I fitted the 29.5mm Mcgard tuner locking bolts without any problems from the extra 2.5mm length.......
