Gasket Question

Hey
I just replaced some cooling system components and had a question regarding gaskets:
1) the water pump i reattached had a rubber gasket. Should I have put a liquid gasket as well?
2) When i replaced the thermostat housing, i saw that there had been loads of liquid/silicon gasket applied to the rubber gaskets. Should i have put on extra liquid/silicon gasket?
I havent yet refilled the cooling system so i could still add the gasket if needed. I just never have heard of liquid gasket ontop of rubber...
