Help Required! EML - Camshaft Sensor Fault

Hello,
New to the forum and looking for some assistance, hoping someone on here has some experience of the problem I've got. My girlfriend has a 2013 Polo 1.2 match edition and the engine management light has intermittently been coming on for a couple of months now. I've scanned the ECU with a Carista scanner which bring up the following two fault codes:
P0341 - Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance Bank 1 or Single Sensor
10980 - Manufacturer's Specific Code
I've tried replacing the camshaft sensor but it hasn't solved the problem. I don't drive the car often but it appears to be running ok to me, no significant pointers to suggest the timing is off. (Although I'm no car mechanic).
The engine light coming on is intermittent and goes out by itself sometimes. My girlfriend is convinced there is a trend of it coming on as the car becomes low on fuel and then resets itself shortly after filling up again. As it's intermittent I'm tending to think it may be an electrical issue such as a slack connection somewhere, I'd have thought if the timing was off the light would be on permanently?
Just wondering if anyone has experienced similar in the past or has any advice on what to check next?
Cheers in advance!
