Radio Safe Mode

I have a 2006 Polo and have just had the battery changed and my radio says safe mode. I have the code but dont know how to get the radio into the mode where i enter my code. any ideas?
Is it not just the station preset buttons, 1 is LHS, 2 is next etc.
What you have seen happen means that that radio is not that car's original radio, the car will always remember its own first radio, good luck as if that code is not correct then that radio is now scrap as VW will not help you unless you can quote the VIN of the car it was first connected to.
