DRL as Sidelights in Pos 2

Hi all,

New here, wondering if someone can give some lighting advice please.

I have a 2014 6C with the low level DRL’s. My daily commute is often in conditions where it’s dim enough to require tail lights but light enough to not need headlights. I know I could code it to Scandinavian style and have the tail lights on with the DRL in the 0 position, however, it’s then a faf to then revert this each time tail lights are not required.

Is there a way to make the second switch position use the DRL instead of, or with the front sidelights, either by coding or wiring?

The front sidelights have about as much light output as the candle on my coffee table and it seems silly to have those on with the tail lights, when the DRL’s provide much better visibility in dim conditions.

Many thanks!

Andrew

Yes, this is possible. What tools do you have at your disposal to do coding?

Thank you. None as of yet, would Carista be suitable?

I don't know, I don't really know the programme. I can only provide you with some instructions for VCDS, but not otherwise.

Just a minute, am I reading this correctly, OP are you genuinely wanting to use position 2 when driving just to make sure that the tail marker lights are on?

If so, I'm sure driving like that is not legal at least in UK - side lights only are for use when stationary and have been since maybe 1980s.

Your best plan, in my mind is, to enable the rear markers to be on with the DRLs, I think that some manufacturers already have that way of working, front DRL are the minimum requirement in Europe when the car is moving on the road.

Personally, I'd prefer to have "day light higher intensity" rear markers, but there is always the risk that they mask the indictors, and normal intensity rear markers for use at all other times when the car is moving.

Edit:- actually now a days it is probably quite difficult to find a good reason for "position 2" or sidelights when there is also a parking "one side" lighting function, maybe it is just difficult to remove this functionality from "motor car requirements" in terms of homologation.

The best option is to just turn on the low beams. But I'm not to judge the legality, just the technical side.

This is what I’d be doing. 👍🙂

I agree there is little reason for position 2, that’s why I’d like to code it to be more useful. So it would be as follows:
Pos 1 (Off) - DRL (default)
Pos 2 - DRL + tail markers
Pos 3 - headlights (default)

Then in theory parking lights would still work on the indicator stalk, not that I ever have a need for them.

That’s the easy option, yes! But I am wondering if the above is achievable. I am a bit OCD when it comes to lighting.

I agree, that’s why I’m trying to do this. Just would prefer to have an easy toggle so I don’t look like a pleb in bright sunshine!
