App Connect - not compatible

I've read a few threads about app connect and needing it to be activated at a dealership.
My app connect says it needs to be activated at a dealership.
So I rang one yesterday they checked my reg and said its just not compatible?
They couldn't tell me why or why its an option in the car if its not compatible.
Anyone else had this problem? Its a 66 plate GTI, I've just bought the car so just wanted to be able to use Android auto or mirror link to use some form of sat nav?
Can't seem to see a thread that talks about this?
