Both tail lights not working Polo 6R

I've seen a few threads on this, but so far none that solve the issue.
I noticed that the warning light for the exterior lights came on yesterday after a long drive, and noticed that both rear lights weren't on. Since then (now one day later) I haven't seen it come up again, but the issue remains.
Since then I have replaced the W5W (501) bulbs and the brake lights (even though they were working before). Then I turned to the fuses (most threads recommend looking at the 21 fuse, I removed this (then the beep begins) and put it back in because all seemed good. I've tried looking at other fuses, and there are no glaring issues.
All other operations of the light cluster are ok including; Brake light, indicator & Fog light. The switch to turn the lights on also responds at the front (just not the back).
Now I am at a complete loss of what it could be, and ready to just give it to an auto electrician. So this is my last hope really before shelling out on that.
