Never seen check engine light

Hi all, i have had some problems in the past where the engine has misfired but after new plugs and small fixes this has not happened again, but it got me thinking that the car never prompted me with a engine warning light. This light does not show up when i turn the ignition when im going to start the car either. I read on the 6N2 GTI forum that the 2000 models had some other mechanics which made it so that the check engine light does not show when starting the car but the 2001 models did. I do not have a GTI but i have a 1.4mpi SOHC 2000 model polo so maybe this is the same thing?
