Please Help! Multiple warning lights after changing rear hubs

Hi all,

In need of some help or guidance. The car in question is a 2015(65) Polo 6C GTI 1.8. I recently had a noisy rear wheel bearing so decided to replace the pair of them, changed to Borsehung (6Q0598611). I get no errors on start up, they only appear after around a mile or so of driving, Brake workshop error, an error along the lines of automatic headlight adjustment, I loose abs and no speedo. I have checked and the hubs contain the ABS sensor ring, I have taken out and cleaned both rear sensors and they both appear fine and damage free. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have just ordered a fault reader to hopefully shed more light.

The ABS carries out a self test within a few feet/meters from an engine start up, have you tried starting up and only driving the car maybe 100 yards, if it is a pure ABS issue, it should fail that selftest.

Edit:- I think a single front wheel supplies the road speed signal to the speedo, so when the ABS gets disabled the speedo reading will be lost - which does not seem to be a clever "feature" as the car can be driven with the ABS disabled, so why deny the driver road speed info!

Another Edit:- when you say that you changed rear hubs, did you buy new hub including bearings and swop them over, or did you buy just new bearings and fit them into your old hubs, if you did the second thing, was the correct generation of bearing removal/fitting tool kit used, as it sounds like either a/both bearings are not in exactly the correct position in the hub, or have started to walk out of their correct position due to an error when fitting them into the hub(s) maybe even by damaging them by not using the correct generation of bearing fitting kit.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I've just taken it out to test it, fine on start up apart from not being able to reset the tyre pressure monitoring, can drive it 100m without any errors, after about 15 minutes all the errors came back.

Both were new wheel bearing and hub assemblies, the bearings came in the hubs. I have also just changed front discs and pads but cant see that being a problem?

If one of your abs sensors is unplugged/ out of commision you should still have speedo reading. This happened to my front left

unplugged abs sensor should directly throw a code. my guess is, incompatible hubs or broken magnetic field on one or both

I have ordered two more hubs to try and rule out having installed the incorrect ones, although the parts supplier has checked off my VIN and claims they are correct. When the new ones arrive and I fit these are there any checks I can do to check the magnetic field etc?

Have you still got the original old hubs, if so compare very closely with the news when they arrive, just in case they are also wrong, check all sizes, especially any that "fix" where the ABS reluctor ring ends up relative to the rear face of the hub which is a good reference face to use as that is always in the same place in the car regardless of correct or incorrect hub assembly.

So I pulled both rear hubs today, checked all measurements and compared them to the original, exactly the same.

Went and bought two new sensors, installed them both and still getting the error after roughly a mile of driving. OBD reader I bought doesnt show any faults, maybe it can't read the ABS ones?

All I can think is one of the two replacement hubs was faulty out of the box?

Most workshops should have a magnetic card, the size of a credit card, to visualize the magnetic stripes on an abs hub. You could try to have a look that way at your hubs

If all is as you say at the rear then check the fronts, make sure you haven’t accidentally trapped a wire or something else?

The trouble with most cheaper/cheapest OBD2 scan tools is that they are only reading engine emissions fault codes, they will not be addressing the ABS controller.

Now if you could get these fault codes read, you might be in a better position to solve this, currently you are just using logic, and sometimes that costs a lot of money, wasted money.

Getting the ABS controller codes read, then if it was only from one side, clearing all fault codes then swopping the hubs over and checking fault codes again might tell a correct story - that would let you know if it was only one hub.
