Broken Headunit replacement/repair help please

Hello all, New to the forum so cheers for having me.
My dads partner has been left a 1.2 SE TSI MY64 so a 6R (I think) in her close friends will.
Unfortunately the factory Headunit seems kaput and just asks for an emergency download switching between a red and blue screen.

Before the old boy sadly passed away he took it to VW and I’m told VW wanted 3K to replace it  On research it seems others have been quoted similar !
Anyway I have been asked if I can sort it out so I was thinking just throw an aftermarket double din in there and job done.
I eventually found the quad lock connector plugged into the CD player in the glove box. Can I just re route the wire harnesses to the centre console with an adapter incorporating canbus ? I do have a pioneer unit I can use. https://incartec.co.uk/product/Pioneer- ... PIO-DMH-BT
However it seems after research the car may loose some functionality if so what would it loose ? so not sure what direction to go in.
Apologies for the long post and any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

try these.

If you are not looking for an upgraded unit with app connect they may be able to do something with a basic unit for about the same cost as an after market unit but retain 100% functionality

You would think that now that quite a few of them have failed, if that is in deed true, there will be somewhere that can fix them at a sensible cost.

Also, scrappy selling serviceable units from crashed cars, if you do go down that route, having identified the infotainment unit that you need and is suitable to fit into that car without any mods, you will find that initially it will only work for a short time then mute the volume - but that is relatively easy to sort out, a properly kitted out VW Group Indie will be able to connect that car to VW Mothership and swops things about so that that second infotainment system will get logged officially as being part of that car. This is known as component protection removal - the only time there will be an issue is the car that that was removed from is listed as being stolen, or the headunit had been nicked from a car and then sold on and so listed on VW's records as stolen.

I've taken that risk already and bought a newer version of headunit for my older Audi S4, via eBay and from someone that resells recovered units from scrapped cars, maybe they even included the original reg number of the car - but I've forgotten. Anyway I fitted it into my car after removing the non DAB original, this one had DAB, and checked that everything worked okay and it did for the first switch on, then as expected component protection kicked in and all sound was muted - so I'm someone that has managed to buy a used working unit and got component protection removed and it all worked out well. The cost is done legally via a VW Group Indie is nominal, maybe 0.5hr labour.

i'm also someone who has bought a second hand unit off E-bay and got it fully functional in to my polo (very similar to OP not some random old audi) so quoting from experience.

to do it the correct in a 6c polo (Like the OP has) requires for CP to be removed from the unit which then puts it in a "virgin" state and lots of the options don't work (Blueooth, DAB etc.)

Then it needs all the FeC put back on from the factory spec to bring back all the functions.

The indy I visited wasn't able/sure how to redo the FeCs so that required a visit to a VW who perfomed them for an hours labour charge

Yes, that is exactly what my Indie would need to have done, that is all part of the process of making a previously assigned unit fit for use in the next car!

My point of making the comment about having actually having done it was to give the OP some more confidence about going down the route I suggested, that is al, no need to get huffy about things, hopefully most people are trying to give others honest true and proper help.
