Intermittent wiper no longer intermittent

I have an early 2016 Polo and have been having an issue with the windscreen wipers lately.
I enabled the auto wipe functionality when I first bought the car and kept the stalk in the intermittent position, on the lowest setting.
As of last week, the intermittent setting just remains on indefinitely. When starting the car, the wiper will wipe once - and then a few seconds later it will kick into what is usually the middle setting in the stalk and won't stop. Despite there being no rain!
I have cleaned the windscreen above the sensor, that didn't work.
I then tried to disable the setting in the infotainment system, but that doesn't seem to have an effect on the intermittent position anymore - the wiper just keeps wiping!
I have searched the forum and feel lucky in a sense that at least my off position on the stalk works, alongside wiperfluid etc... but I can't seem to find anyone who has had this specific issue (although I'm sure it's a matter of me not searching the correct terms).
Before I take it to my local garage, is there anything simple I can try?
Also please bear in mind I'm pretty useless with cars, so haven't got a diagnostic tool to read error codes and have never replaced a fuse (but would be at least willing to have a go at that if it may help)
Thanks
Jake
