Electric power steering whining

Hello, strange one this! Car is 2007 1.2.

My electric power steering pump makes a whining noise but only when the lights are on???????

It’s definitely the pump as the noise comes directly from the pump itself and when I move the steering wheel the pump is quiet when working but noisy in its rest state.

I kind of get that pumps can get noisy but it the fact this only happens with the lights on?

Thanks, Tom.

Well the mystery continues, the noise is actually coming from the headlamp unit, looks like it’s the headlight aim adjustment motor.

Also I’ve noticed a tapping noise coming from the headlamp on the other side!!! How on earth headlamps can cause so much trouble it a mystery!

So today I bit the bullet and took the bumper off and pulled off the headlamp that sounds like it has a woodpecker stuck inside it!

Mine are Hella units and a bit of research revealed the motors are sealed in the casing….great design!!! So I cut the casing open where the motor is but I couldn’t work out how it comes out, the motor spins freely so maybe it’s a fault with the electronics?

If anyone knows how to fix these units that would be great. I siliconed the case shut and put aluminium tape over the join.

Very frustrating morning!!!!
