What size socket fits the front hub nuts before I buy the wrong one..
6R0, 1.2 tsi. CBZB, 6 speed box. Part number is showing. Part No is 6Q0 407 396B. (M16 X 1.5)
M16 is 24mm, but I'm convinced last time I saw one it was bigger than that! (maybe I'm having a senior moment..
I guess 12 point rather than a hex would be the choice?

Yes it's a 12 point socket. From the top of my head it's 30mm.

My gut feeling is it's bigger than that. Last time I removed one I can remember borrowing a socket off a mate because it was bigger than i had at hand. I think 34-36mm???
Ok found it after a little Google. It VW T10125 which is a 36mm Bi-Hex socket. To Ebay we go....

The one that I bought maybe over 15 years ago, for that job, was a Draper impact deep socket - that was not bought by choice/selection, it was just a size I needed to buy and blundered across this Draper branded impact quality deep socket at a local Sunday market stand - and it worked! Up until that time I had not considered that it needed to be reasonably thin walled so that it could get into the slight counterbore on the front hubs, some times you just get lucky - but much better to plan to succeed!
Edit:- sorry, yes 36mm same as Laser Tools 0954 but hopefully a bit cheaper!

How annoying, I edited my posting to add that without knowing that you had just posted that minutes before I did that, anyway I added the Laser Tools stock number - though hopefully that was not needed.

If you think the Laser tool is expensive, have a look at the OEM VAS tools (often just rebranded a-brand tools)

Good good, the 30mm will come in handy if/when you want to remove the rear hub nuts!
Out of interest, why do you need to remove the front hub/drive shaft nut?

Front nearside outer CV Boot has a tiny split, you can only just about notice it, but it's only going to get worse. Think that would be an MOT fail/advisory? Parts have just arrived to do a service anyway, so thought while I'm feeling OK,(With my heart failure things just get done slowly.) and the weather is predicted to be picking up, I'd get it done. (Plus my mates around to lend a hand & tools as necessary) While my hands are dirty caliper return springs have also just turned up too so I'll stick them on.
What with Covid, Brexit, ever rising bills and the ongoing war in Ukraine can't see me swapping the car in the foreseeable future, so may as well give it a little TLC. Even though car approaching 11 years old it is still in very good condition (only done 38K) The one exception is the alloys which are showing their age. Oddly the lacquer is failing on the inner side of the wheel making them look a bit tatty. I'm debating whether it's worth getting them powder coated. There is a place locally that is supposed to be pretty good but they want £80 a wheel. My neighbour had his refurbished last year by an "on the drive" service. They were just repainted, while OK, they weren't spot on, but that was only £50 a wheel.

More quality brands like spidan and skf their boots feel like pastic, versus the replacment feel like rubber.
Use a rubber/ plastic mallet and whack the CV joint from back. Use MoS2 grease ( Divinol LM2....)
So far I have tried GSP - outer OK
GSP inner - one broke this week - i think it was the installer fault when putting back the axle ( Right axle)
SKF great no problems so far.

I'd earmarked a SKF kit for the job, just not ordered it yet. That comes with clips, grease, boot and nut. Spidan is not a manufacturer I've heard of. They European?
To be honest I bet I've not replaced a boot in 30 years so it should be a bit of adventure. My mate will provide the muscle if anything needs persuading to move.
