Any SEL Owners?

Post by rbz5416 »

I've never been happy with the ride on the larger rim/lower profile of the SEL which uses 215/45/16 instead of the 185/60/15 of the lower spec. Never driven a car on 15s but wondering how other SEL owners find the ride? I always equate top spec with comfort, so not sure why VW opted for this choice & dread to imagine what a GTI is like on 17s.

I've just changed tyres to the latest Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance 2 which seem to have made matters significantly worse. Every bump in the road is transferred to the cabin & through the steering wheel. Driving on roads made of concrete sections is like driving down a line of railway sleepers. Does anyone know if a "downgrade" to 15" rims is a straight swap?

Yes if the 15 inch rims are the correct size, it's a straight swap.

Maybe check your shock absorbers. The ride is a little bit rougher with 214 45 16 tires but not that bad, at least not for me. It was pretty tough before changing the shocks tho.

I find the 16" alloys okay on my wife's 2015 1.2TSI 110PS SEL 6MT, and I've never noticed her having any issues with them, that car gets 15" with 185/60 winter tyres 6 months of the year and we, I think, really don't notice the change very much - with her previous car a 2002 VW Polo 1.4 16V 75PS SE, when changing from the factory fitted 15" to 14" winter wheels and tyres, the change was dramatic, I think that the 15" on that car was 195/50 or 55 and the 14" winters were 185/65 - if both these sizes have the same rolling radius.

It is the factory fitted Contis that are still on the 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 110PS SEL 6MT.

My own car is 2011 Audi S4 and it has 19" wheels on in summer and 18" in winter, and the 19" are okay with the S4 suspension etc, it has sensible springs and dampers, not the shorter cheapies that the "full fat" S-line gets I think.

All the springs and dampers on that 2015 Polo are original and the current mileage is just under 40K.

Edit:- oh, and both of us are wrinklies! Pressures in summer 36psi front 34.5psi rear.

Recently bought a 2011 SEL, previous owner lowered it too so the ride is even worse, fun but not comfortable by any stretch haha. Came with the, presuming 17", rims below so guess that only exacerbates the issue.
