Manually adjust the headlights?

Post by mirceaculita »

I need to adjust my headlights. I have to keep them on the lowest position and I'm still flashbang-ing people in front of me. I tried spinning the white plastic screw but seems to be stuck...
Do I have to do something with VCDS to be able to turn it or could it be broken?

H4 lights are only mechanically controlled, not by a control module so VCDS won't help there.

Do they have to be in the lowest position before turning that screw?

Yes.
But if's not going, you can take out the headlight and try to lube a bit the gears. You will see them when you take the headlight from the car. Then try to move it.

I set the headlights in the lowest position (number 3 on the dial) and still the screw wouldn't turn. I think I have to take out the headlights and lube the gears. It's weird they won't turn with that screw but turn just fine when using the dial inside the cabin...

the dial operates a motor inside the headlight that pushes a rod that is attached to headlight reflectior tilting it up and down

Took the headlights out, changed the bulbs to a set of Osram Nigh Breakers and adjusted to roughly to the correct level.

Had to use a bit of WD40 to lube the gears. Patience was key since I'm pretty sure they were completely filled with dirt since I could feel it grinding while turning the screw. Took about 5 minutes of continuously going back and forth little by little until they got unstuck.

For the first time in 2 years I can actually see the breakout line of the headlights on a distanced wall
