Hi All,

I recently restored a CAT N Polo 6R 1.2TDI and can't understand the following

1. On cold start, it hesitates a little to start and when it fires up a cloud of white smoke is emitted which clears off immediately.
2. On full throttle and specially in third gear I can see cloud of black smoke in the back which seems to get better if I use additive like Diesel cleaner etc but has come back again.

'Cloud of white smoke' on cold start is scaring me  :(. Quick google seems to bring up that it may be related to fuel leaking into the exhaust system or a turbo nearing end of life
The white smoke smells like fuel.

What do you reckon?

Also to add it's been fully serviced and recently had Water pump and Cambelt replacemed.

Injectors or EGR valve might be bad.

Worth cleaning the EGR?

Depends on the condition. Usually it's already gone when it smokes badly. Sometimes you might be lucky.

Is it worth using the Injector cleaners to see if it makes an difference?

Do you have any hissing noises under accelerations?

How difficult is to remove the EGR valve? Do I need to dismount the exhaust from turbo?

Yes it's quite labour intensive. Either remove the DPF/turbocharger or remove the drive shaft. In the workshop it's about 4-5 hours of labour with experience and specialist tools.

If you could remove the injectors and get them tested, that would probably be the easiest way to start.
If you mount them back, you do have to renew copper seals, injector bolts and O-rings.
