My Polo 95PS has hit 82,000 miles and is soon due for a cam belt change. When I had it done on my VW Up, I had the water pump done too. Is this advisable for the VW Polo, or just get the cam belt done?
Also, any idea what sort of price I expect to pay from VW, and an independent garage? The Up was over £400 and the indie garage wouldn’t touch it due to the need for a special tool costing £200. On my Polo service receipt, they put down £200 inc. VAT for the cam belt change, but I don’t believe that.

Re: Cam belt change
What is the cam belt replacement schedule on the 1.0 TSI engine?

Re: Cam belt change
It is about 90,000 miles or every five years whichever comes first. It was 80,000 miles or five years for my non turbo 1L 3 cylinder Up.
Re: Cam belt change
I have been told it is 50,000 or 5 yrs whichever comes first, I have also been told by a VW mechanic that the water pump is not driven by the cambelt so does not need changing

Re: Cam belt change
Thank you. It must however be over 80,000 miles for a change, my car is regularly serviced by VW as per the schedule.
Re: Cam belt change
The recommended interval for the 1.0 TSI engine cam belt is every 5 years or 80000 miles. My partner's cam belt was ruined by a cam belt adjustor bolt at just under 4 years old / 20000 miles and was replaced under her Peter Vardy warranty. At the time I asked if it was worth paying to have the water pump changed too and they said that as it isn't driven by the belt, it doesn't save any time/labour to get it done at the same time.
Needless to say we extended the 3rd party warranty for another year!

Re: Cam belt change
There has been much discussion of this on the various VW Up!, Skoda Citigo and SEAT Mii forums where I was alerted to the "water pump trick" when having the belt replaced, particularly at a main dealer.
I have my wife's Mii serviced at a local independent and when replacing the belt last year they confirmed that there is no need to replace the pump at the same time (unless it is faulty of course) as it is located at the opposite end of the engine.
My indie charged about £300 for the job. No mention of special tools (but perhaps as VW/Audi specialists they already had one?).
