The only way I did was getting the special keys from eBay -
£2!, which I thought was quite cheap to be honest.

I want it out this weekend though
I'll have to see if Halford can sort it.

Halfords sorted one of "my" stereos before. Also i've removed it as well.
If you want to do it your self see the thin slits on the stereo, stick something thin and fairly wide to release the clips that are just behind it, stick your fingers (this is just for ease) in the tape drive and pull it out

.
I've done it using sony keys before.

pull out the little store cubby situated under the head unit. it yanks out with a bit of force. then the head unit can just be puled out. at least thats what i did. didnt even know about a special key

i tried this yesterday and the front face of the VW stereo was coming off with it. i got scared and didnt pull the cubby any further.
are sony keys included with a new sony headunit?

Depends on the cage the headunit comes with. I've got the MDX M690 (completely blank screen that flips down) and that didn't have keys with it.
Gf has a cheaper Sony mini-disc player and that came with keys becasue the cage was differen't to mine.

If you have the keys, you don't have to take the "thingy box" off underneath the stereo, but you can take it out when the head-unit is out, way easier.
Do you need the keys mate

?
