Polo 1.4 Diesel 2014 Shaking when starting & cutting out

My 2014 1.4 Diesel BlueMotion Polo is shaking pretty violently when starting and sometimes cutting out as it's shaking so much. The revs seem to fluctuate a lot between 0-1k for a couple of seconds then it cuts out. It usually works after a second try but continues shaking for about 30 seconds.
It doesn't shake if it's been running in the previous few hours and works like normal after 30 seconds of running.
It seems to be getting progressively worse over time so I'm worried it's causing damage to the engine and will cost me a lot to fix if it's not resolved soon. I've searched on the internet for a while and can find no similar experiences.
Any help would be much appreciated!
