I charged my flat battery but the engine wont turn over

Hi

My Polo isn't used much and when I got a flat battery I charged it overnight, now a full 12V.

Now the courtesy lights come on fine, and when I try to start the car, all the dash lights come on, but the engine doesn't turn at all. When a friend with a different car had the same problem, turned out to be just the immobiliser had to be re-set. Anybody any idea what my problem might be?

Thanks all.

what happens exactly when you turn the key?

The dash lights come on but nothing else. No starter motor sound, engine doesn't turn over.

Try to connect directly the battery to your starter

I'd start with checking that battery's present health/condition as this might just have been its last bit of "abuse" that has ended it's useful life.

when a battery can't hold the charge for the starter, it will usually make a christmas tree on the dash or flicker all the lights.
or when the battery is being an asshole, it won't engage the starter solenoid and everything else will be fine. but i haven't seen that before on the polo platform
