MIB2 questions: displays interchangable and component protection?
Idle mind times what with the storms blasting us here at the moment.
So I happened upon a Composotion Media unit from a 2018 Tiguan going at a fair price.
It has control unit (3Q0 035 840 B) and 8" display unit (7C0 919 606).
Of course the display unit is not going to fit the stock 6C head unit dash panel opening, but it got me wondering if the 6.5" display from the 6C Composition Media unit (6C0 919 603 A or 6C0 919 603 B) can be hooked up instead. Any ideas? Same cable? Same resolution? Same comms between units?
Also, with regards to component protection, does that work across models? For example, in this case, fitting a Tiguan unit into a Polo.

If the screen resolution is a match, you might have a more-or-less plug and play swap. Make sure you have the correct adaptations/codings. You'll probably be able to remove cp. Go for a dab 5f module if you see chance.

Re: MIB2 questions: displays interchangable and component protection?
Thanks.
Don't have DAB here. Heck, I stopped listening to all radio stations during lockdown.
I've seen some mention on Golf forums that with MIB2 the displays can be swapped from the 6.5" to the 8". MIB-1, not so much.
I guess it must communicate and determine resolution.
There are kits available with the screen upgrade, no change to brain.
So in theory getting a 6.5" display unit from a 6C will connect to the MIB2 Discover Media brain.
I've seen a number of people selling these down here thinking it's the complete infotainment unit as they forget it's a 2 part system (or the more obvious reason: stupid thief).
The adaptations/coding will most probably be an adventure in itself.
Looking at the 6.5" vs 8" displays, they do fit in the same area on things like the Golf. The screen is taller, but buttons are in the same place, etc.
But is the Golf 6.5" display the same size as the Polo? I highly doubt this.
There'll definitely be some cutting/grinding of the bezel to get the thing to fit.
I think I'll first go see the unit in person, offer it up to the mounting area and see just how it compares.
Probably won't take it although tempting at the price. I've been after a Discover Media as one can alter the factory EQ curve.

Also, just finding the actual resolutions for the different screens (5" through 8") is near impossible.
Does anyone know what these might be?

Did the 6C GTI not have an 8" screen option? Or this a 6.5"?

Yeah, noticed that when I made a quick comparison with the Tiguan photos. 6.5" will be fine for me.
I will look around for a 6.5" from a damaged 6C. Maybe I can combine the 2 units and get a bargain setup out of it.
Last I checked they were asking a fortune for 6C parts like these.

Re: MIB2 questions: displays interchangable and component protection?
Have a lead on a complete composition media from a 6C.
This will most likely have component protection triggered.
I'm getting horrible confused as to what is needed to remove/fix component protection if that is in place.
Does one need ODIS-Service or ODIS-Engineering?
Which version of this will be needed?
Which interface is needed to work with the 6C: VAS5054A, VAS 6154 or Vxdiag VCX Nano?
Getting straight info on ODIS online is madness.
It's like trying to get through XDA forums... Android tinkerers will know. It's all over the place.

ODIS service with online connection. Or get it hacked...

Thank you!
Whichever is cheaper works for me.
Just waiting for photo of label on the unit to confirm what it is.
Then price negotiation begins.

Re: MIB2 questions: displays interchangable and component protection?
So have some screen shots of the infotainment unit.
From the 2016 reg 6C.
The unit is from week 21 2015.
It's a 3Q0 035 819 A.
MIB STD2 unit.
It won't have android auto, etc, since I think that was build week 22/2016 onwards.
Display is the usual 6C0 919 603.
It has ABTm-Std-2 on it.
The Tiguan unit is 3Q0 035 840 B, manufactured week 11 of 2017.
This is MIB STD2 +/NAV.
The display has ABT_HIGH on it.
Not sure of the 819A unit will gel with the STD2 6.5" display. Connectors are the same.
So tempted to spend the money and grab the Tiguan NAV and try and get the 6C screen, but that'd be a waste.
For my year model (2016, reg 2017, H-vin) I see control units range from 3Q0 035 819 to 3Q0 035 842.
The 3Q0 035 819 A shows from manufacture date 25.04.2015 to 30.05.2016 so looks like this will work fine.
So I think I will try and get this unit and all parts needed (cabling compared to Composition Colour), but a question came up while looking at this:
How does one determine build date for the vehicle?
My VIN says "H" (2017).
Where on the vehicle is the build date? Week number and year.
I swear I saw this info on my vehicle recently.
I have that on the VIN plate.
Lines up with the paper in the boot (almost).
Is it 05/16?
I know this was built late in 2016, first registered early 2017.

Re: MIB2 questions: displays interchangable and component protection?
So, to answer my own question, the "05 1 6724" on the VIN plate (and build sheet in boot/trunk, not in service book) is 1st day of 5th week of 2017 (H in VIN).
I have a Monday car. Hope not too bad, but at least not a Friday car.
Birthday is therefore 2017-01-30.
Anyway, snowball happened, I now have this:
Excuse the oil on the left ... It's a VW thing.
Glove box was mouldy. Bit of surface rust on the main unit as well as car was open to elements.
Have to order missing cables as the entire wiring loom was sold to someone else.
Looks like a $18 cost from Aidu Auto:
https://www.aiduauto.com/products/mib-s ... b-car-2895
I don't see the LVDS cable in there though.
All I really need is the 2 display cables.
I don't think the multi-pin connector goes to anything but the main control unit.
The loose orange/yellow wires in that link seem to be for CAN.
Any ideas who might have these cables? Or sells just the quadlock with the display cable attached?

Re: MIB2 questions: displays interchangable and component protection?
Think I'll just use this thread to keep track of this.
Quadlock cables arrived from Aliexpress.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006642229856.html
First time that something took less than a month to arrive! Was expected a 3-6 month wait.
Notes:
LVDS cable provided is not keyed so could work for USB as well. Works fine for the display.
The green and blue plugs are not extended from the original Quadlock.
Blue plug contains microphone, but whole new microphone unit provided.
Green plug contains USB, but USB moved to Fakra connector instead.
The CAN wires are terminated with female crimp connectors; quadlock needs male pin instead to connect to CAN signal in original quadlock.
This is probably because they expect you to wire it to the BCM or gateway (on retrofit).
Not doing that. Have ordered pins and will fit them to the other end of the cable to connect to the original quadlock.
Do the same with the microphone connection. Fit pins on new quadlock to take original microphone.
This way the only connection is to the existing quadlock used for the Composition Colour unit.
Will add pins for the TX/RX so I can connect to serial console without needing to remove the main unit.
Terminals for the CAN bus connection:
Pins/sockets are MQS (Mini Quadlock System). 0.6mm pin size.
Female: N 907 647 01 (TE Connectivity 5-963715-1)
Male: N 907 648 01 (TE Connectivity 5-963716-1)
Regular speaker and other terminals on quadlock:
Female: N 906 845 05 (000979225E)
Male: N 103 189 05 (I think)
3-pin housing which might be useful to extend into the Infotainment CANbus (eg, highline reverse cam):
N 907 467 01
N 907 648 01
See TE Connectivity 1-98600-1 and 1355620-1 on Digikey/Farnell/Mouser, etc.
System works fine. Managed to get the console output on the serial pins and watched QNX boot up. 900MHz CPU
Screen refresh is appalling compared to Composition Colour
Going to try and test fit tomorrow and just put jumpers across for the CANbus hi/lo for now. Want to see if it trips component protection.
Still no idea what all I need for that removal.
Things to do:
Check on firmware update.
Will it take MIB Toolbox? Think it might have a plugin to disable component protection. Whether it is applicable to this unit, not sure. Would beat having to get dodgey ODIS and more $$$ involved.
Write up wiring for the 12-pin connector on the display unit.
Check what is needed to hook up the USB port. Standard is to green plug, but new uses Fakra HDS LVDS cable (4-pin).
See which wire gets signal (wake up / power on) when screen requested on. Might be able to fake a remote turn-on from that.
Can SPDIF coax output mod be done?

Re: MIB2 questions: displays interchangable and component protection?
If the 5f unit have two sd card slots, it's so simple to remove CP, one sd card unit require much more work to hack to remove CP. When I was upgrading my 5f unit from original which doesn't have carplay/android auto, first unit I brought had two sd slots which was easy to remove CP since you just need to install the new hack firmware from sd slots 2. However I didnt research enough, brought a unit only support mirror link. Second unit I brought only have one sd slot, I went a different route, brought a 6154a clone+odis from aliexpress, brought one hour odis online access, remove the CP that way and it was simple to do.

Re: MIB2 questions: displays interchangable and component protection?
Yeah, one SD slot only on this one. I know it's going to be a pain to do different firmware, but we'll see how it comes along.
I looked up how to read the "2nd SD", but I can't see the pins on the motherboard that they're connecting to. It might on the other side.
I'll see what 6152a clone I can find that'll work.
You have a link to the one you bought on aliexpress?
If I can find the pins on the board I don't mind soldering in some wires and hooking up to a SD card reader and doing the firmware hack like that, but that's just to get that MIB2 Toolbox on there if I can. I ideally want to remove all the EQ datasets at some point.
Anyway, hooked it up to the car to test connectivity and it works. Had the jumpers for the CANbus hooked up wrong, but quick swap and it communicated. Component protection kicked in.
The USB didn't work though. Same Fakra connector as on the Composition Colour, but when connected it didn't see USB. Not sure if they're wired differently.
Bluetooth works.
One gets a ton more space in the dash once the Composition Colour is removed. Can fit a tiny amp or DSP back there.
