Hi All

our polo 9n has started to use oil over a few hundred miles until the oil light comes on

cant see a leak or no oil in the exhaust

has anyone else seen this issue and where could it be using it

burning it but no smoke

any ideas

That consumption is way over spec. If the exhaust is not billowing smoke sounds like the breather/trap assy rear of the engine block o/s. You could also have a look down the throttle body and breather pipes around there for any residue build up.

At 90K I swapped the head out for a 25K unit. That was due to a valve train issue and not valve stem seal wear. I'm at 140K now.

I'd expect a puff from the exhaust under acceleration/decel if the seals were worn. Others here have found issue with the breather and replaced it (a cheap part and not too difficult a job).

As for in-situ replacement, I'd guess that could be done but might be challenging. You'd somehow need to support the valves (via spark plug hole the cylinder) and do one cyl at a time. If seals are suspect, it might be worth a try using a quality seal conditioner to see if any improvement to confirm its them (of course they could be totally shot but not sure that is common - as long as maintenance/oil changes etc has been OK)

I have done it recently. The challenge is compressing spring to get cotters out. To hold valve up i turned piston down, stuffed thick rope into cylinder and turned piston up. That holds valve in place pretty well. Obviously don't stuff all the rope in cos you need to retrieve it again. I welded a biggish nut on the end of a bar. Used a chain mounted on longish bolts in an inlet and exhaust manifold mounting bolt hole. Idea is to lever the bar under chain on spring and retrieve cotter with magnet. Obviously use at own risk but it worked for me
