Fuel on spark plugs and fuel smell from exhaust

Hi, my sons 2004 1.4 Polo auto has been running fine until a week ago, then power was down and it was getting difficult to restart after running. Engine management light was on, don’t have a code reader to use unfortunately, but I have one on order.
I’ve checked the plugs,1 & 2 had petrol residue on them, 3 & 4 were a normal light brown colour and dry. When he drove away there was a strong smell of petrol in the air and the engine seemed a bit lumpier than usual.
Checked everywhere, no tubes off etc so I’m guessing that the 1& 2 injectors are faulty, does anyone have any informed guesses about the symptoms?
