Clutch cable issue

I was wondering if someone can help me i have a polo 6n 1996 1.4 8v manual adjusting cable tried to change the cable to but when took it off the new one was too short so had use my old one had my mate adjust the cable while I was doing service and now it seems like the clutch isnt disengaging it makes a winning noise but stops when press pedal to the floor ive had the gearbox rebuilt and clutch done 2020 but the car has only driven around 1k miles since as bee off the road about 4 years any advice would be helpful
