Relative is after a first car and I've suggested a petrol 1.4 Polo, maybe a 1.2. They're a new driver so insurance prices have influenced my selection.

I run one of the oldest BMW websites (sorry!) and am quite happy fixing cars. What I'd like to know is what common problems I need to beware of and which engine codes I'm liable to find in Mk.7 1.2 and 1.4 models. Worried a 1.2 might be a bit underpowered.

I read about chain stretch as an issue but I think that's on newer engines? Are Mk.7s a belt or chain?

For Mk7 Polos, the 1.2 and 1.4 petrols are generally reliable, with the 1.4 giving noticeably better acceleration for a new driver. Both engines use timing chains, not belts so that that chain stretch can occur, but mostly on higher-mileage examples. Listen for rattling on a cold start. If I talk about common issues, then occasional coil pack or injector failures, some early turbo 1.4s had minor oil consumption, and check for EGR and PCV valve buildup.

Engine codes you’ll commonly see: 1.2 TSI (CJZB, CFW) and 1.4 TSI (CAV, CZEA), depending on model year. Insurance-wise, it’s worth shopping around and comparing quotes from multiple providers using sites like this; slight differences in cover or excess can make a big difference for a first car. So, balancing price and adequate protection is key. Overall, a 1.4 is more versatile if the insurance cost works out reasonably.
