Hello all,

This topic will be dedicated to the replacement of the timing belt on the 1.2 TSI 16V engine from the EA211 family, which will be available soon.

The 1.0, 1.4 and 1.5 are very similar apart from differences in the camshaft pulleys.

With 11 years and 203800 km, I think it's time to consider replacing the timing belt.
VW does not give a deadline, although ‘15 years or 210,000 km’ is often mentioned.

The same goes for ‘210,000 km, date of the start of inspections at each service’.

Here is a photo taken last year:

The EA211 belts are reinforced with fibreglass, which makes them particularly resistant.

In any case, I have compiled a list of the various parts that need to be replaced and the tools required for this change:

- Tools:
Crankshaft locking screw T10340
Camshaft clamp T10494
Special tool for the tensioner T10499
Crankshaft counter pressure T10475
Camshaft counter pressure T10172/2-9
At the time, I purchased the T10340 and T10494 combo from LaserTools. It seemed to be the best option in terms of quality.

In general, the official tool looks like this:

Tensioner + screw: 04E 109 479 A + N 106 902 01
Roller: 04E 109 244 B
Exhaust AAC screw: N 912 033 01
Intake AAC screw: N 911 972 03 + WHT 004 914

- Consumables:
Engine/chassis mounting bolts (x4): N 019 533 9
Engine/engine mounting bolts (x2): N 102 862 05 - (x1): N 911 363 01
Mounting bolts/engine block (x2): N 106 802 02 - (x1): N 107 069 01
Accessory belt tensioner screws (x2): N 106 650 01
Crankshaft screw: N 912 044 01
Gasket: N 903 445 01

Also, concerning the locking tools, I found a spanish resseler few days ago, selling an official T10340 crankshaft locking tool.
For the price, it was worth the try as the parts looks almost brand new.

But I have some concerns about the lenght...which is a major value to lock correctly the crankshaft for the TDC position.

For some reasons, my T10340 is only 74.60 mm long and not 75 as it should be.
Also, the lenght between the bottom of the head of the bolt, to the opposite side, is only 64.50 mm.

The LaserTool measures 75.20 mm.
And the height under the screw head is 65.05 mm.

An other guy take some measure on it's own official VW T10340 and he founded 74.80mm, but it's one is a little bit worn.

So, how much should I be wary?

I'd trust the used genuine bolt although there is probably enough/spare space for the slightly longer bolt to screw into without "bottoming out".

I agree with your logic with 11 years being long enough for these belts, I think that there is something other than glass fibre used to strengthen these belts - but I've forgotten exactly which material it is.

Another way of looking at this "belt changing" is, unless you plan to keep this car for another 11+ years, why not just do it now so that you can stop worrying about any belt/tensioner/roller failure over the remainder of its life with you.

For what it is worth, I got a local "proper" VAG Indie workshop to replace the belt on my wife's 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI 110PS, and they replaced the belt and belt tensioner. I supplied a new aux drive belt that I had bought but hadn't got round to changing.

Edit:- by the way, I don't blame you for checking the lengths of these parts - I also do that!!

It probably has Kevlar in the belt.

I'm subscribing to this topic.
Timing belt change on these modern cars scares me and I can't afford the labour fees around here, but luckily the CJZD is single cam phaser and doesn't require the expensive timing tool like the other EA211 with exhaust cam phaser or cylinder deactivation.

Changing the timing belt on my mk1 golf was a 20 minute job. :-) I did it once. That day I circled the car for several hours doing other jobs and at the end of the day I just said "oh well" and did it.

Getting the good brand tools it a good choice. I know where I'm at I'll be buying the Chinese stuff. Hey, seen many change the belts down here with those tools.

You going only OEM for the belt or considering options like Continental? For any belt I always go with Continental.

Also, why do you have the intake and exhaust pulley bolts on your list?
You going to pull off the pulleys?
Don't recall that being needed since the cams are locked.

You need to unthight both camshaft pulley in order to apply the right tension on all the belt.

If you do not do that, only the side where the tensionner is, will be on tension. The other half (after the pulley) will still loose.

Good to know.
I suppose I should have pulled up the repair document for this.
Does seem a bit odd though. Or at least in my mind it means the cams move.

2226, your quote "That day I circled the car for several hours doing other jobs and at the end of the day I just said "oh well" and did it."

I can relate to that!!

Though in my case I'd probably need to change "at the end of the day" to "at the end of the month after doing other jobs"!!

Well, I will try an other way to explain. No worries^^

So, both of your cames are locked on the gearbox side.
Cams bolts still in place (no untight).

If you apply tension from the galley tensioner, the tension could only go on it's own side as, the campulley cannot move and the crankshaft is locked also.
So you will have tension on one side only because the teeth will prevent this tension to be perfectly distributed along the belt.

However, with the cams are locked but pulley are free.
When you will apply tension, all the tension will be spread around the belt until the crankshaft. As the pulley are free, they will rotate (but not the camshaft) and distribute trough the teeths, the effort.

Ok, got it.
The lock is on gearbox side. Pulleys can move regardless since the cams stay still.

Does the tool kit you have no have the pulley lock as well? That little red lock tool.

Nop I didn't have it.

And since the pulley need to move freely during the séquence for the tension, no need of it.

Some TSI need this part, but not mine.

Ok, odd. Every kit I've seen has it. Might be for the FSI motors. They also have a different rear lock tool.
I'd still mark things up. From videos I've seen, the exhaust cam always jumps back a bit.

There is some nice vidéo, in russia where the guys (VW dealership) perform the timing belt from A to B. It's a 1h30 vidéo, but it's very interesting
