Basically, im kind of getting bored of a standard gt.....

do i....

A)Keep the gt and insure it fully comp in my name come renewal time

B)My boss at work says he can get me a sound G40 for less than a grand....do i sell the gt and get one of these, bearing in mind i could only insure it TPFT

Both would work out at roughly the same money, only one is tpft and faster

sorry but i reckon keep the gt - you know it's sound and it'll cost you less to run. a g40 for a grand I reckon will need money spent on it. and TPFT is guaranteed to go very wrong!

the g40 will have some sort of accident damage/stolen recovered, but is still one hell of a car for the money! plus with the low value im not bothered about being tpft!

If you're going to be worried by running costs, reliability, insurance etc then yeah, go for the GT.. but if you want to treat yourself to a hell of a car for not an awful lot of money that should, given some tlc, still have the reliability that old VWs are rightly renound for.. leap on it! If it all goes pear shaped, sure, it's a bugger, but it's not expensive considering it's power, potential, rarity and sheer enjoyment levels, and if it turns out to be reasonably sound, you could easily treble what you'd pay for it with a bit of care and attention.. which I have a feeling you give the GT anyway

I think a rash decision is a good thing from time to time.. just sometimes they pay off, and when they do they tend to be worth it

well see whats wrong with the G40 first as repair work can be expensive. If you went bothered about the expense you'd have it insured fully comp anyway. but having said that even if you are fully comp and involved in an accident, you may still have your car written off and a crap payout.

then when you get a G40 you'll get bored with teh standard power, so will want to modify that, so its gonna cost more and more.

You haven't even started to modify your gt. Why not do that instead of buying a damaged G40. You need to think how much is it gonna cost to repair and maintain one when you have a GT with lots of potential.

not having a go or anything but the accident damage is not the issue!

My current job involves repairing insurance write-offs.my boss has said he thinks he could get me a fairly decent accident damaged G40 for under a grand. that means im not risking it too much if i was to insure it TPFT.

ut then i also know what your saying about modding the gt. my thinking being im getting a faster car for more or less the same money (running costs aside)

Looks like you've made your mind up mr P, Get it bought!

A G40 will definately cost you more to maintain than a GT too. Bear in mind that you'll want to give it a diet of Optimax, and oil changes at 3k instead of 6k miles to keep it sweet, and plugs cost around £65 a set from VAG (though there are occasional £20 sets on Ebay). Add in the factor of a charger rebuild (unless you're lucky enough to get one that's been recently rebuilt), the fact that you'll get through front tyres more quickly, increased fuel consumption etc. and the G40 can soon become expensive. Many owners are also replacing fuel pumps and fuel injectors to try to save themselves from the piston-melting failures that people like me have been unlucky enough to experience. Doing that alone will cost you £300 or so.

With some choice mods you can make a GT pretty nippy, and they're mods that shouldn't cost the earth either. If I were in your shoes and knew that I could afford to run the G40 then I'd go for it, but in the meantime why not tweak your GT a bit and see how it goes?
