Adjusting rear bearings?

Post by Karl_CLCoupe »

How easy is it to do, and are there any special tools required? Thought I would give it a go myself, since it came up on the MOT.

Apparently showing signs of play on the passenger side rear. My dad reckons re-gresing and adjustment might help solve matters, thought I can't say I have had a good look at their condition.

no its easy enough to do.
my mk2 failed its mot for both rear bearings last weekend and they are both only 4 years old......

... carrying a spare engine in the boot 4 a month mustnt have helped.

you need a scewdriver, pair of pliers and a large socket, plus jack and chassis stand so you can remove the wheel.

sounds like it should be easy enough to do if it requires no specialist tools. Thanks for your help! :D

you dont need to take the drum off. I usually do my rear bearings up finger tight. dead easy to do.

don't just tighten the nuts up with a socket, there should be a small amount of play in them.

Yeah, emphasis on finger tight there. Don't get carried away with them, cause they are tapered bearings and expand when warm.
