suspcious noise!

problem need help!
my 1L '97 MK4 has started making a funny kinda grinding /something sounding loose noise (hard to describe) any ideas.its been doing it last 2 days. weather has been cold but dry, engine never gets warmed up to mid point on temp gauge as journey to work is to short.dunno if its something to do with that. its had mot in oct. got new cam belt and wheel bearings. apart from induction kit engine is standard. anyone got any clues????
