BEST OIL?

Alright, a stooopid question I know but I don't wanna scrimp on price to get decent oil to top me 4 year old Polo up with so can anyone recommend the best oil to give her?

Just don't buy **** from places like halfrauds, get decent oil.
Give my mate simon at opieoils (
www.opieoils.co.uk) a bell he will sort you with the best oil for your car and its not much more expensive than halfrauds but you won't believe the difference. It made a huge difference in our polo over the magentec the previous owner used in the car.

Quantum Synta silver
Recommended by VW for all dubs with fuel injected engines, turbo diesel ect ect ( the only difference between quantum synta silver and quantum synta blue is that silver is semi synthetic so thats why they say its for fuel injected and high performance engines)

A change would be a better idea!!
If you are gonna give it a full change - do not use engine flushing solutions - change it for a cheap oil (same price as a flushing additive) leaving the filter alone - drive for 50 miles and then change it again filter and good oil in this time - much less harmfull for the engine and will remove a lot of crap out of the engine.
Don't mix mineral with full synthetic BTW if you are changing to a full synthetic from a mineral run it with semi synth first for a few thousand miles.
Last point 3,000 miles is the maximum I run between changes - The LC gets changed every 1,500

It's the oil that keeps the moving parts apart and it degrades with time so the older the oil the more the engine components wear.
Modern cars have extended service intervals 10 K plus between oil changes!!!!! cos of "better" technology oil - total rubbish - they have extended service intervals because it make the manufacturers cars more price competitive for the leasing companies.
IMHO - I would no longer buy an ex company/lease car because of this extention of service intervals - they are gonna be very expensive for the second owner in terms of engine manitenance

I'll post a picture of a the internals of a head taken off a dealer serviced on the button every 9,000 miles - 100,000 mile engine.
I'll also take a picture of another head from a car that's done 160,000 miles with changes every 5,000 miles
You can make your decision based on that - it's a very graphic comparison
End of Semi rant.....
It does frustrate me that people today neglect the things that they rely on the most after all how much is a car worth with a seized or broken engine regardless of how much bolt on tat and performance additions

yeah, even i can do it! and i have 10 left thumbs
though personally i think on a polo anything more frequent than 5000 is still a waste unless you do a lot of in-town or hard up'n'down hill driving... it comes back out looking not too different to how it went in (mind you dont leave it as long as i did for my first - black sludge!)

It's also soooooo much nicer to work on an engine that is clean inside compared to one thats all sludged up and gummy

thats quite interesting
Are you talking about cars that have used the same grade of oil, been driven similarly etc?
Was there much difference in wear that you could see?
Personally I've tried to change mine every 6 or 7000 miles in the past, unfortunately my last change was at 10k, oops!

After lookin at that, I feel i should be punished
We havent looked after the mk5 very ell interms of Engine and oil. We always used to say its ok new engine next year.
Think its about time i started to look after the one thats in it. No wonder we get so much problems.
Also the car is an Ex-rental and we are the second owner, so it looks like its had a hard life.
When the new engine gets fitted to the GT i think i'll take care of it and do oil changes every 3 or 4k. Theres another NEw Years resolution for me

OK both engines have used Vauxhall semi synthetic for their entire life
- driving style and usage
- well both were autos and driven by mature drivers
- the cack engine with 100K was spanked by a taxi doing a U turn and written off - I picked the whole car up for buttons after the previous owner had started to repair it himself - well collect the parts to repair it for starters - and failed to locate a bonnet and given up
I am rebuilding this engine soon to put into my Monza GSE - the cam journals are scored but servicable and I am damn sure when I take teh head off it'll need a bit more than a hone and some new rings
- the 160K engine I stripped and rebuilt at Xmas and had been driven somewhat enthusiastically including a copule of track days...... Interstingly I found no evidence of bore wear at all when I pulled the head off although the gasket was very near the end of it's life
The head itself is absolutely perfect no scoring in the cam journals

Don't be so hard on yourself - make the change now and it's amazing how quickly the engine will clean itself - does the teabag principle make any sense to anyone?

But wouldn't you get a better price for a well maintained engine if you sold it after the conversion?

Wow that's some very convincing picture-work there Bstard! I think i'll go figure out how to change the Astra's oil now... Not 100% on when it was last done, but i've run it more than 3k miles now, may as well do it as a preventitive measure (already bothered to change the leads after all)
To marque-hijack for a moment, what oil do you use?

But hard thrashing isn't damaging unless done on a cold engine or with cack oil
I was *going* to argue with that, til I realised the Polo was either stone cold (thanks to the seized thermostat) or running on cack (albeit reasonably fresh) oil for a lot of it's life..
