clutch/gearbox problem

I've recently bought a '98 1.4CL polo having previously run about in a beat up old '90. This new car has developed a problem. There is a constant scraping niose while driving that stops when the clutch pedal is pressed and returns when released. There are also small jerks through the gearstick that coincide with the scraping. It doesn't occur at idle. Any ideas - is this a gearbox or clutch fault perhaps? If so does anyone have any idea how much this sort of thing costs to put right?
Does anyone know how to alter the idle speed as it is running like a dog at the minute. What should the rpm be at idle - mine says 8000! Fuel consumption is poor and aside from a leak (I can't smell petrol anywhere) is there anything that might bring it down to about 25 mpg?
Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated to this new-comer to MkIV polos. Many thanks.

8000? or 800?
im guessing the former if you have a digi dash or something odd like that... otherwise :)

should be around 850-900 if i remember right, that sort of difference shouldnt be too noticable/troublesome.. maybe a symptom of something else

dont know whether its clutch or gearbox there but the most recent VW boxes have gained a bit of a bad rep...
