...but i dont suppose anyone knows how high the gearing on a 1.6 zetec escort is set? kinda 1997... bear with me on this!!

facing the darkside i know but its one of the cars ive been semi seriously looking at, it fits the bill in terms of practicality and so-called power. Nice and comfy, good ride, spacious, a few toys (PAS.. but no central locking, dunno how they worked that out), excellent condition.
However it's got no tacho... and on the test drive it seemed to be lacking guts, either that or i was revving it far lower than i thought.. and it sounded frantic at quite a few points.

it had trouble maintaining 35mph on one hill the polo can accelerate 35 thru 50 on, both cars in 4th gear.

if it turns out to be because its completely gutless despite the big block, then i think i can say bye-bye escort LOL)

.....because......... i need some kind of good reason other than a predisposition against fords to get rid of this. i'm constantly told that, its your decision, i'll be happy whatever you choose, but i fear the lady (/ies and gents) doth protest too much! the bodylanguage says otherwise.

thinking maybe of a golf now - seem a bit more plentiful than 5 door polos, at least at dealers what offer warranties

possibly cuz people hang on to them til they're only saleable privately!

You know you want another volkswagen.. you'll never be released from the grip of VAG..
Good thinking anyway, I'd take a golf over an escort any day ;)

nope... still looking.... the thing was a mule in daylight. very pretty by night and from a distance, and for half the price then maybe

but £2200 for a p-reg with as much uncorrected parking damage (but bizarrely so much drastically overenthusiastic back-to-blacking on the tyres) as this one had, plus the general dodginess of the place with sunlight on it (including clios with no side repeaters --- or blanks in the holes.. etc)..... just walk away. even if it was a 1.6 GL. just find the next garage instead.

rats

so spent a dull afternoon poring thru the local free papers picked up from outside asda. there's lots of lovely stuff if im prepared to travel fifty bleedin' miles, and very little close to home. maybe a decent part-ex-to-clear astra..

have i heck, did i ever say i was?

got enough to deal with on the net without hunting down ford / golf / etc forums just on an off chance (though i did go a-hunting for relevant pages and turned up nothing, apart from very basic info / some reviews, on Parkers).

nissan almera is now on the list too, though i have a funny feeling that they're crap to drive, need to see what reviews are scattered about.
