Just wondering, how do you tell the difference between an ecu for a 1043 and one for a 1.3?

And..what would happen if i got a 1.3 chip in my 1043?

just curious.

i dont think there is a visible difference, least not til you open it

might be between an spi and mpi (monomotronic vs motronic / digifant)

the maps would be a bit fuggered up for getting a 1.3 in a 1.0, probably run quite a bit rich when not using the lambda readings... itd still go, however.

when does the 1.0 chips benefit kick in is a question... in the next 1000 miles?
or has it happened so gradually that i cant tell :D

You're only getting another 3-4 BHP from those 1 litre chips and that will be higher up the rev range, so from normal around town driving, I guarantee you won't notice a difference.

It's well worth the money to support Alan though!

Tahrey, did you get any improvements in the idle with the new chip? ie. is it any smoother than before?

well, i *think* i did

it can still be a bit choppy at times but then there's several caveats with that (cold air, stuck thermo, no hot air pipe, possibly temp sensor/lambda issues, the heinous oil consumption etc). smooth as a baby's arse a lot of the time, when not at an rpm that resonates with the dicky door

doesnt seem to be any particular extra bit of power is my main "thing"... i get it well up into the 5000+ range when giving it stick on the motorway (4-speed) but the top speed is pretty much the same, though i'm in a zone where it's round about 1mph per bhp increase. (and up to 5500, 6000, very occasionally redline - which wasnt raised as i'd hoped - and its much the same as ever)
torque might be a little better.. possibly a little worse. dunno. the very least i can say for it is, it hasn't had any noticable detrimental effects - and my MPG looks to have gone up a little. so perhaps the remapping is aimed elsewhere, better economy but same power!

flat spots slightly evident around the place but seemingly not as bad as before. still got the noticable pick-ups as it goes thru 1500, 2000, 4000 from standstill in 1st & 2nd, but not a case of nothing happening at all unless you've got it in at least the high 1000s.

would have found out more definate if i'd made it to the RR day, would have sweet talked the crew into giving me two runs.... first with the (run-in) fahrvergnugen chip as the first-car-out, then take the rest of the day to put the original back in and bez around until it had bedded back in, and re-test :)

nice experiment anyway, taught me a little more about the car (e.g. the ECU is worryingly small and simple!) and i cant be so much bothered any more. probably will tune the engine properly (as in making it run right rather than boost power), maybe fit induction kit, sort the door and sell it when i've got a replacement. not attempting to be the tallest midget at the circus / fastest VW SPi 1.0 any more :D

must note that although the power doesnt seem to have improved, alan did warn that it may not show massive improvement unless i already had a decat, sports zorst and cone filter intake......... currently running with (knackered?) cat, exceedingly cheap kwik-fit back pipe & box, and the regular biscuit tin, (dirty) paper ring and trumpet   so it's got it's work cut out!
