Nope, it's not slipping - or at least I don't think it is.
The Mk4 has notoriously bad leccy windows. I've had to replace both my window motors (including the mechanism) already. Both wouldn't go down anymore. There was power at the switch and at the motor, the motor clicked a bit, but didn't move.
If this is what you have, read on;
What happens is this:
The window winder wheels (you know, the toothed wheel inside the black box) manages to block itself up. The motor tries to move it, but it's stuck - literally. There's a video that discusses the problem, with a solution, here:
http://www.lowdub.com/windows_6n.mpeg (25mb)
If that seems like it has nothing to do with your problem, you've lost me

nope it goes down fine (hur hur!) but i have to give the window a little pull as its going back up as it's struggling.
The motor itself seems fine.
Any idea on where to look inside the door. I took the trim panel off and the whole mechanism seems to be inside the door itself. and hard to get to. I thought maybe a belt had come off or something ?
I had to remove most of the grey foam backing in the door - why does it never go back on properly !

That grey foam is the stuff my nightmares are made of. I hate it with a passion.
Ontopic; I don't really know what's going on there - if it's blocked, it won't budge at all anymore. So it's not that, obviously. I'll ask around, maybe someone else knows something...
