Hey all,

As you may know from seeing my car in members rides i have a set of 17"s at standard height BUT...

The tyres rub on full lock obivously making a hurtful noise too :(

Is there any way in getting around this?! can the 6n2 front arches be rolled at all? or will lowering the car help slightly?

is it just a matter of putting up with it or down-sizing??? ( breaks my heart even thinking about down sizing but it'll have to be done if i cant come up with a cure due to every day travel in my pride n joy  )

Cheers All

So where is it rubbing - roll bar?

Lowering normally makes it worse

We need to find out where it rubbing first - scuffs on the tyre should give the game away but failing that get a mate to turn the steering to full lock and then look carefully underneath for where it touching

Here the rub.... sorry no pun intended

There are solutions to your problem but a bit more info is required ie Offset on the rims could be too low a set of thin spacers could resolve the problem

Just tell us where it's rubbing first

arch liners can be taken out to give more "clearence"... however i wuld go for pro arch rolling if u want no rubbing when lowered.

bstardchild,

It looks good but does sound good with that rubbing lol :)

The rollbar where is this located? Amateur sorry mate lol

Wheel on full lock - it seems to be touching the inner side - from the arch lip i'd say its about 1/2 maybe 3/4 of the way in (hope this makes some sort of sense)

the wheels are 4x100 i believe and about 35-37et - doesnt really give any major details on the paperwork

tyres are: 205/40 R17

carmadaaron,

I have already taken out the rear arch linings

Erm havent really looked into the removal of the fronts but it seems to on the metal rather than the plastic.

I called R-Tec the other day and one of the guys there said he wasnt 100% sure to whether the front arches could be rolled but the rears could

Or even doesn't

OK OK - just find out what it's rubbing on - my money would be on the roll bar as that tends to get in the way when big fat rims with wide tyres and std offset are shoehorned into a wheel arch......

I've looked again at the piccies and they fill the arches well - I'm guessing that they are 7.5 inch rims - maybe 8 inches and ET35/37 is gonna be might close to rubbing at that width

Simple instructions - don't take offence here please......

Get mate to turn the steering wheels with engine running to full lock

Safety first - handbrake and neutral couple of bricks under the back wheels and remind him if he feels like a spin you will remove his balls if he tries to move the car with you under it

Get head and shoulders under the front bumper and look into the arch area front inside of the wheel would be favorite as the back side of the wheel is unlikely to be fouling

Once you've found contact we can establish what it is

nope but I'm sure the info is stamped on the wheels - have look there

Yep wide as wide things and proabably a bit tall too but speedo accuracy is probably not a worry if they are rubbing at the moment

bstardchild,

Followed your steps today in regards to the rubbing

Engine on, Full Lock - the outter edge on the wheel (at the top) is touching at the back of the inner arch

I havent had a chacne to have a look for the wheel info due to the car park at work n not getting home till 6pm

OK I'm trying to understand that and struggling - It's not your description i'm sure it's my stinking cold

If I'm correct the back inside edge of the tyre is rubbing/touching against the arch liner

So full lock "Left" - The front wheel on the passenger side of the car rubs on the rear (inside) edge of the tyre and fouls against the arch liner

Conversly

So full lock "Right" - The front wheel on the drivers side of the car rubs on the rear (inside) edge of the tyre and fouls against the arch liner

Is this area plastic or Pressed steel - ie part of the shell or plastic arch liner

If it plastic I'd be cutting a section out to give the tyre some more clearance

If it's metal I'd be think you are gonna have to stick some spacers in between wheel and hub to create more clearance

Does this help any or have I got it all horribly wrong - I have to check like this cos I'm making a recomendation that may lead to you cutting chuinks out of an arch liner or buying spacers

ok i may give the spacers a shot?! ne ideas of where i could get some and how much would they set me back?!

one more thing, bit of a dumb question really - is it best to get a set of 4 or just do the fronts?

Thanks for all your help by the way been a saint

Ok Spacers set of two are about a tenner last time I bought some (5mm thick is the most most places will do - it's all got a bit nanny state when it comes to stuff like this and they are getting harder to find but I'm sure some of the other chaps will guide you in the right direction)

Before you rush off and buy a set - I might still have 2 of em in my Garage - I'll check tommorrow

The last set I bought weren't thick enough so I had four custom made to a drawing I did on cad - they weren't that expensive as it turned out - maybe £35 for all four from memory

but they were for a specific application to restore the offset to std

I wouldn't try that as a first port of call because whatever spacers you put in will need increased length on the wheel bolts - 7 turns of the bolt is the min requirement 9 turns is ideal so a 5mm spacer will use up several turns of a std wheel bolt

I'd try and find out if I could remove part of the plastic front arch liner if thats what it's rubbing on first - spacers move the wheel out so it could rub when loaded on the outer edge of the arch JM2pW at this stage
Randall wrote:one more thing, bit of a dumb question really - is it best to get a set of 4 or just do the fronts?
5mm at the front you aren't gonna notice the difference TBH - you could do both ends but it might be exactly what you don't want at the rear and with spacers fitted will rub the arches when you are loaded up in the car

I'd deal with the fronts and leave the rears alone

I seem to be the only one posting - which I found strange - normally means agreement with what I am suggesting - I hope *gulps
