engine swaps...

Anyone out there got and advice for an engine swap?

Let me try & be more specific now...

Wanna remove an AAV engine & replace with a 3F engine. (all this to go in an AAV spec shell / car).

As far as i know, i hopefully have 'all' the parts needed, inclusive of full wiring harness from a 3F car (and i do mean 'full' harness, not just the engine bay).

Any suggestions as how to go about all of this?

i.e... wheres the best place to make a start (time isnt too much of a problem, so it doesnt all have to come together over a full weekend! LOL)

Cheers.

yeah its not that hard to do really. here are a few things to note.

1) you only need to change the GT engine wiring loom, not the engine bay loom, and all conectors are different apart from the one that goes into the coil and the one by it that connects to the main loom. just make sure you get them the right way round.
2)when you remove and replace the engine (assuming it will have the gearbox on) it need to be removed/replaced at an angle with the cam belt end being highest. this is so that the end of the 5 speed gearbox misses the chassis leg.
3) with the rear engine mount, its best to unbolt the whole assembly from the car as then you get more clearance.
Also taking the inlet manifold off will help, but you can manage with it still in place.

you can do it almost anywhere thats flat if you've got a engine crane, and you should be able to do it in a day without too much trouble.

You should change the gearbox too to get the most out of the engine too, and its as easy to change the engine and gearbox as it is to just change the engine

When I took my GT engine round to metz's I had a quick look under the bonet to see if the engine bay loom was compatible with the GT loom. To my horror it wasnt. Theres two plugs ont GT loom that plug into the rest of the car, both have 3 pins on, on the 1.0 (and prob 1.3) loom the plug near the ECU had 5 pins and the one near the coil had 2 iirc. SO I had to post out the rest of the engine looms as well (at great expense!)

we could have just found out what wire did what and done some chopping, but seeing is I had the wires spare anyway it was worth it.

yeah, you're right Gareth - need all the engine wiring from the fusebox onwards. andy bodged his CL loom to a GT engine loom when he ran GT injection on an AAV lump, but it's not an ideal way of doing it.

So, would u suggest i change the entire cars loom then? (since i do have a full GT loom + ECU)

Well not "the entire car's loom" no, just the ones that are in the engine bay.

everything from the fuseboard forward. 3 bits in total.

You simply unplug the engine bay looms at the fusebox and swap them for the GT items. It's dead easy to do. As Yoof said I bodged a GT engine loom to the CL one, as I didn't have both GT looms when doing the GT injection conversion on my old AAV lump.

amstrange1...

Don't suppose you have any pix of a GT engine being installed do ya?

Could prove quite useful to a numpty like myself

Hopefully getting an engine hoist / crane & engine stand from Machine Mart on Saturday (going halves with a m8 on the hoist / crane) :P

Something i would like to know is... how much does a 3F engine weigh, minus its gearbox?

Im guessing it wont even be close to 170 - 200kgs, more like 125-150kgs?

Cheers.

Sorry mate, I don't. I have some of a G40 going in - but they're normal photos at home, so I can't scan em in for you til I'm next back from uni. Actually, one of them is scanned in - see my sig pic!
