Since everyone seems to be asking what things are worth a thought a would join in!

I have been offered a g40 engine (no gearbox) the chap wants £300 but a lot of bits are missing:
Distributor,
halfshafts,
intercooler air feeder (plastic bit),
standard air box.

everything else is there engine wiring loom etc.

Also the charger would need overhauled to be on the safe side and it has a new clutch. The chap bought it for his mk1 golf project but has since fitted another engine. The engine was removed form a 88,000 mile written off G (RIP) which was canobalised about 2 years ago, thats all a know! What do you recon?
If a buy it it will sit in the garage till August (insurance issues).

Sounds like it's worth a punt. I reckon you'll be able to get the bits you need to sort it if you look hard enough.

A G40 'box will be hard to find cheaply, but others work (the 8P from a CL is preferred) and aren't far off ratio-wise. Don't use a GT one though. The intercooler pipe won't be easy to track down, but I reckon you'd find one eventually - there are enough G40 owners opting for custom intercoolers these days.

The distributor could be bought new for £120ish, but some GTs also used the same part number, so should be easy to track down. Driveshafts aren't a problem - I use CL ones, as do a lot of people. The lack of an airbox isn't a problem either - induction kits are easy to come by.

At the end of the day, you could sell the charger and get your money back from that if the engine turns out to be a dog.
