I''m having a hard time understanding what you mean, but I take it you want (a) New wheels, and (b) Wheels with a bit of lip to them.

For me, the ideal size on a Mk4 is 15" or smaller. If you want to go euro, try some 14x8" with 195-45-14 tyres. Or, if you're feeling daring, try some 14x9" wheels with 195-40-14 tyres, by far the sexiest tyre/wheel combo I've ever seen.

A more conservative size would be 7x15 wheels, such as ATS classics, or RH Cup wheels. Add some 195-45-15 tyres and you're set.

Images? Sure!

Schmidt TH line (13 - 15 inch):

BBS E30 (replica, in 14"):

HTN Rennsport (14"):

Image

PLS Sebring (15"):

Image

WRD Mesh (15-16"):

All of these are three piece, which means the width can be as conservative or insane as you like.

It's illegal everywhere AFAIK, except the USA. Still, the wheels can be had in every size you want.

i thought it 'twas ok as long as the tread was covered by the wheel arch - thats how the stretched look started...

You sir, are correct. There's still a 3 cm limit in Holland and Germany for the wheel itself. The thread has to be covered by the arch, looking from the top.
