Something to be concerned about... or not?

When I purchased the bottom side grille units, as fitted to cars with spotlights, I noticed that that air could flow freely through the fins. This apposed to the units that were fitted to my car, that are completely closed, thus preventing air from flowing through.

:?: My question now is, is there a reason why the original units are closed...are they protecting something? Will I be damaging something now, allowing the air to go through?

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Mine are open too. If anything it could help with cooling and ventilation.
It's the same with the centre one and the bonnet.

The reason they were filled in before is probably something to do with cost. a mould to make the filled one is probably cheaper than the other.

They do list a different grille for vehicles with charge air cooler. Perhaps thats what the dealership ordered :?

I too was thinking about increased ventilation Petrified, though I would :P

That has to do with engine bay ventilation really. Not only for vehicles with charge air coller, though.

All Brazilian Polos have open grilles, and my country is not exactly known for its ski resorts if you know what I mean.

Don't worry Ciden, you can get both open and closed grilles as tandard from VW. My car is the same model as yours (same 1.6L engine, and I believe your engine was made in S. Carlos, Brazil) and it has all front grilles open.
