Battery + Overcharge = Big Bang

Post by Buzby »

My father got into his old audi quattro today, put his belt on, turned the key and BOOOOOM!!!!. . .. The battery exploded, absolutely blew it to pieces. the noise was unbeliveable and made his ears ring for about an hour. Gave the old boy a shock , he was shaking like a leaf., Hes alright now though.. :)

The battery on the old quattros is under the rear seat inside the the car (stupid place to put it) and it blew the base of the seat up and flipped it over and put slivers of the case into the headlining. How he did'nt get any acid on him ill never know.. you can never find baking soda when you want it though..

jesus christ - that is some carnage huh? What is the exact cause of that? Did he leave a trickler on there or something?

Yep found out later the trickle charger was faulty and was putting out 18v at a couple of amps.. 8)

Battery's explode when there is a build up of hydrogen gas from being charged and a spark inside the battery (ie a faulty cell) ignites it , causing in this case a flippin big BANG..

The moral of this tale is if you trickle charge your battery, make sure its getting a trickle and not niagra falls.. :D

my dad's always told me to have a healthy respect for car batteries as he has seen one explode too! they go with an almight pop!

whenever connecting a battery in a car, i always look away just incase!

Funny that -- when i put the new battery in the car I stood at arms length from the car with my arm through the window to start it..

I would rather have an old unsealed battery as they can be topped up and have less chance of going dry like the one on the quattro, as this probably caused the plates to short and cause the explosion on startup..

Progress i suppose
