Top speed issue

Post by bradley1983 »

I have hit 139 in my car on many occasions but since my new gearbox rebuild I never had the chance to fully open it up, but tonight the M3 was empty due to the fog so I thought why not! By the way I am writing this in the services so yes, silly speed but the road was clear.

My car topped out at 126! Is it possible to lose 13 mph on a gearbox rebuild? And if so HOW do I get it back?

lol based on the weather conditions, id say driving at that speed is insane for one lol

Anyway yes it is possible to lose top speed if they didnt use the correct ratio for the 5th drive gear. The only way to get it back is to have the box rebuilt properly to factory specification.

Let’s face it realistically it never hit 139 anyway, Speedo’s are never accurate.
I'm a firm believer that the GTI won’t go any faster than 128-129 despite what the Speedo may be reading.

Most people seem to be able to hit "140" on the dials though.

As Alex said it’s the Ratio's that have caused the loss of speed, you will need another refurb with the factory ratio's restored to get that speed back.

Dangerous and illegal, especially with worn bushes and bearings.

It was empty due to the extreme weather conditions and ice on the roads.

Who drives 130mph in the fog! your crazy.

My mrs wasn't well so I was coming back from london with lemsip and lockets. Lol

I agree if the clock says 139 that's not the true speed but if it says 126 how slow is it really going.

As for the bushes and bearing....oops, forgot that's why I was driving slower. Looks like it will be going back for another rebuild in jan!!!

Speedo's can vary some are more accurate than others.
The are normally a couple of percent out but in some cases it can be as much as 10%

Get your garbox sorted if you want that 13mph back but by the sounds of things it may do you good being slower.
Ever considered a TDI box  that will slow you down

I imagine it might have been downhill part of the road where you went faster before, plus how many times? Same road? Same conditions? Its not a fair test as such, so it might do exactly the same speed but it isnt really an accurate way of measuring it. If they have changed your ratios so they are shorter that would then surely mean it has improved its accelaration slightly in losing top speed.

Its also very bad driving to do that in foggy conditions, wouldnt have looked good if you had been killed or killed someone, "what a nutter driving in fog" is what youd have been remembered for, even if it wasnt your fault.
