I've noticed on some of the Golf forums that where owners have posted pictures of their cars, the chrome exhaust tips on many GTI and R models are quite dirty from carbon / sooty deposits. Some owners have commented that the sooty build up happens quite quickly and needs more than just a wash to remove it. GTD models don't seem to suffer - presumably because the DPF filters the sooty deposits out of the exhaust gasses.
I've never had any carbon build-up issue with the chrome exhaust tips on my Polo GTI in 13 months of ownership. They stay remarkably clean and only ever seem to get dirty from road dirt in wet weather that's easily washed off when I clean my car; no special products needed to clean them or keep them clean.
Just wondering what other owners experiences are? Could the type of fuel used be a factor?

Re: Polo Owners with Chrome Exhaust Tips; how sooty do your tips get?
I've had a fair bit of carbon build up on the bottom half of my exhaust tips.
I'll admit I'm a little bit lazy when it comes to washing my GTI, so that might be more of a factor than anything else. Little bit of effort with some Autosol sorts them out though.

Mine's protected with SiRamik HR, and gets a weekly wash. Not had a problem with carbon build up. I generally use the cheapest available Shell petrol.

I've done 14k miles in my 1.4 TDi and the exhaust tip is as clean as the day I got it new.
I guess proof DPF's do work!

Wash the car every 7-14 days.
Keeps clean quite easily.
I also whipe the inside of the exhaust.

I weekly wash and have had no problems, when i didn't for a month or so I have to use wirewool to clean it off, not hard to look after really.
