Dash Problem (Formally Fuel Gauge Problem!)

Post by DScape »

Hey all ! First problem with my polo since I bought it a few weeks ago

My clocks keep cutting out randomly?! Well I've noticed it 3 times that my dials cut out and come back on, eg. speedo/rev go to 0 and clock goes to 00:00. Pain in the arse resetting my clock all the time, all I wanna know in life is the time!!!! Could this be anything to do with my stereo install? It was only put in quickly until my mate at bassjunkies fits it properly, or could it be that it's actually buggered?

I've got 2 Months warranty left, but if the above is something I can do meself I'd rather do it that way then be without a car.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help! Cheers

Exactly the same happens on mine! Whilst I appreciate this doesn't help you much, at least I can sympathise!! I did put this problem on here a couple of months ago and was told it could be a loose battery wire but I checked (and also had my mechanic check at mot time) and nothing seemed to be loose.

I've noticed that when the clocks reset to zero, the rev counter and speedo also drop right back to the bottom, only for a second. Doesn't affect the actual revs of the car. Mechanic also checked the speedo wire and this seemed to be ok. Don't know if this happens on yours as well?

I'll keep and eye out on here for the solution cos it really is a pain in the ass!

Yes mate, exactly the same happens on mine! I've only noticed it after the stereo was put in, but maybe I just weren't paying attention before?!

I've got a mate at VW who's a mechanic. I'm gonna see if I can get him to check it over. You're bang on tho, goes to 0 and don't affect the revs or the stereo. Thanks for the reply mate, if you do find a solution please let me know! 8)

As for the petrol gauge. Got in my car this morning, and it is registering over the red now...and 1/8th or a tank. Haven't filled it up yet, but that means I've managed to lose quite a it of fuel in a 2 minute drive!! At least it's working...ish anyway, but I don't think it's bang on accurate now.

Damn this polo !!! Just got my single wiper today too, it don't appreciate it me damnit

I get EXACTLY the same problem!! Im just driving along, and then all of a sudden, all the dials just go dead. After about 2 seconds, they all come back on again and all is well, except the clock is reset. Bit annoying.
What year polos do you guys have? May be a problem on a certain batch?

'95 M

I see a pattern already

Anyone got any ICE installed ? I've only noticed it after the stereo was done, only stuck it in quickly until the weekend.

*Amended title as I don't have a fuel gauge problem now!*

yeah mines been doing it for as long as i can remember, even after i installed my ice. Doesn't look like theres gonna be a n easy way of fixing it - sounds like a glitch in all the oldest mk4s.

Edit: Mine's also a '95 M

It's done it about 3 more times that I've noticed since I posted this thread!

I'm gonna have a word with a mate who's a VW mechanic and see if this is a common fault or something?!

Seems to me like its a common fault. I doubt theres much that we can do to fix it. Maybe replace the faulty parts with those from later models? Problem is finding the faulty part.
