hiya mate welcome to the forum
right wheel sizes...
we've had lots of discussion recently about this
basically first things first, if you plan to slam the car don't go for 17's.
The max you will be able to lower on 17's will be around the -35-40mm mark without scrubbage. (anyone feel free to correct me if im wrong)
on 16's and 195.45.16 tyres however i've gone -75mm with no scrubbage at all
and 15's even lower still, past the -100mm mark

so really it boils down to whether you want the car sitting on the floor or you just want some bling in the form of bigger wheels (cough* wink aaron :P)

17's will fit though with minor scrubbage.

past the -50mm mark your gonna need to buy new shocks or even consider the full coilover set.

hmmmm?

16s seem the wise choice but if i did end up with 17s will dropping -35mm/40mm look as if its been dropped or will it not show much a i do not want a big gap between the tyre and arch

you wont have hardly any gap at -40mm on 17's as the bigger the wheel the less you can lower, im sure polosilver can help you out as he has just sold his and he had 17's with a slight drop.
but the car still looks too high on 17's imo
each to their own :)

my m8 just got 17s (205/40/17 tyres) put on yesterday, his rear arch liners rubbed, so he removed them. hes actually just put his mudflaps back on.

does look very good!.. but lowerin will cause some problems...

better to stick with 16s, less problems.
