Faulty Ignition Switch

I searched the forum and other places, found a common problem of 'faulty ignition switch'... now could this be the reason for this noise I get upon starting the car, happens now and then, but seems more frequent now

Ignition switch is a cheap part... but have to remove steering wheel and faff about fitting to fit a new one, long and fiddly job according to the haynes manual (even drilling out a bolt so the old switch slides out of its housing!) beyond me I think

Any ideas?

that noise sounds like the bendix on the started retracting, pull the starter and give it a clean in my idea

Finally, the awful 'whiiiizzzzzzzz' noise when I start the thing no longer occurs! I ended up having to get a new starter motor for the thing.

how much is a new starter m8? expensive

its a 1.4 SE 16v 75bhp AUA Type, Year 2000

also all the gaskets/o-rings that need replacing after removing the inlet manifold, as i understand, the starter motor is a b***h to get to and its best to remove the inlet manifold for easier access?????

or should i just entrust this job to the dealer

I have just started to get this noise too!! I just got mine lowered and I told the guy about it and thinks it might be the bendix too.im going to try cleaning mine.

you should be able to get away with cleaning it really but if you want prices then just give us a shout in the vagparts forum

and it shoud be fairly straight foreward really just a bit fiddley at times

ill work out what seals I need and post in vagparts section, as I understand, removing the Inlet Manifold first gives much better access to the Starter Motor... allowing me to remove it from the car and try to clean it

polo2k, what 'page' is the inlet manifold on? so I can work out what seals etc.. and how it comes apart? e.g. page XXX-XX thanks m8

Yep - all sorted now... it was a worn bush on the starter motor, bush can be replaced, but I decided to replace the whole starter motor and bush, in case the internals had been damaged also

Sounds all purdy now heh

well the replacment starter motor was about Â£80 on exchange from vw (they take your old one as a swap for discounted price) and I fitted it myself with a bit of help, bit of a fiddly task, but got done. Jacked the front up

you would need to buy a bush too. I guess you could just replace the bush and it will get rid of the noise

yeah but you did the right thing really. Its not worth faffing with the bush, only to find that after all the blood and knuckles that is still makes a noise.

You should have switched the engine off first! (I know it doesn't say that in the haynes!)

lol, engine was off - but had just driven it to a mechanic friend's place, in case I needed help with anything (plus for the tools, jacks, stands etc..) and just had to get on with it while the engine was still hot/warm - it cooled down eventually though heh
