My 1.0 will get 340 miles from 3/4 of a tank of petrol and reach and cruise at 90mph quite easily

Thats why Im trying to explain to the girlfriend.
She can not understand, why I need and extra £800 for the custom cams I need to go with my trottle bodies
Couldnt this £800 go to a larger engine?

No mate.

So i raced the 1 litre 'with cams'. I had a passenger and he had a full car load  was beating him just all the way to 5th gear, about 80mph, then he gradually took over me. I've drove with a full car load before and it is slow as f**k so i guess the cams are doing something right.

lol doesnt sound like the kind of power that will push you on to 120mph though.... you were beating him right up to the point where aerodynamics becomes more important than weight, and only 5-10hp difference can give you quite the edge then (5-10hp which would have been just about compensating for the extra passengers).

(standard 1 litre will just kiss 90... 1.3 will end up somewhere 95-100mph, a 5mph difference can look like a lot when you're on the losing end of it... and the mk3 would still go up to the high 80s alright when rammed solid with gear from emptying my university room, just took forever to get there and suffered on the hills)

but it had *some* effect at least, so probably worth it if you're dead set on tuning up a mousepower engine like that ;)
(like i was when i bought the chip :D)

Some effect is better than no effect, if the money is right.

im still debating this
my 1.0 mpi does just over 100 and thats on a level bit of road
105 max with downhill and wind behind me
in all honesty a standard 1.0 will do more than 90.
as for the cams, it still seems to good to be true, must be putting so much stress on that little engine it probably won't last very long.

dunno, will it be causing undue stress to the engine?

more so than NOS would?

Any car around the 1.1 - 1.2 mark isn't going to be much different to it's competitors... Get a GT or G40 :D

You should try fuel consumption in a GTi when you are giving it welly... you can practically watch the fuel guage go down...
