exaust how to

Post by polo2k »

heres how to make your very own gehtto performance back box that dosent sound to bad.
firstly raise the car safely (see safty in the how to section)
Image
now you can cut the original backbox off but its a single piece system on my car so i took a disc cutter to it right next to the weld into the box
Image
leaving me with this

note these pics are on a re instalation after i killed it with a kerb
then find some 2" diamater tube about 2 1/2' long and cut into it lengthways at one end (make 4 cuts one at 12'clock, one at 3o'clock one at 6o'clock and one at 9) i also added a chrome trim
Image
then find a combination of clamps to clamp this new tube to the old system, you will also need to hold the other end up and i dont have a welder so i used wire (true ghetto stYle)
Image

i will warn you though that this exaust is fairly loud (i can hear min when im really on the throttle, for about a mile) but the sound is very deep and throaty (not raspy) so you will prolly get a lot of compliments on the sound. hopefully josh will show up and tell you how he thinks it sounds.
btw remember that if youve just driven the car the exaust will be hot (duh!)

thats a nice n cheap idea.

obviously it wont sound the same on all polos cos it depends wot engine you have.

a friend of mine has done a similar thing to his mk2 coupe S but made it into a side exit exhaust by cutting the pipe just after the mid-box & adding a length of pipe. Its VERY loud (too loud in my opinion) & makes a lot of backfiring type noises when u take ur foot off the power.

are you supposed 2 have a back box on for the MOT??

for the mot there is no rule that says you have to have a backbox but it is at the testers descretion to fail you car for being too loud but seen as every rally car in the world rally championships has an mot i dont imagine this being too much of a problem
on another note tyhe next exaust (arriving in 3 weeks) may be a little louder but its stainless. im not giving any deatails here yety but when it arrives i will :D
BTW josh could you do me a favor and describe the sound as i havnt got any recordings of it

Download works, rightclick --> Save target as... worked fine for me. Would have been my fault if it didn't so I'm well pleased!

I have done this to my car and have the mot in the coming days. I am expecting it to fail for sure, but we'll see. It's basicly done exactly the same as stated in this thread. They'll see the coathanger and notice the clamp to join it and think it's reet dodgy!
