My sister wanted to show all us boys she knows wots wot when it comes to buyin cars...so she bought a Polo R reg i fink 1998. It is reving around 2k mark when idel...i told her to get the ECU reset she said her machanic told her to buy a new ECU £150! (after resetting it twice and still having the high revz)
The high reves can be caused by other thigs aswel cant they...i.e throtle body?! Im no expert but i have never herd of anyone buying a new ECU if the engine is working fine other then the high revzz!?
could be anything, dont take it to vw, take it to a few garages for advice, get a collective view, and the most common they all suggest start with that, running problems can be seriously f*****g anything from a grain of sand in an injector sucked up from the bottom of ur petrol tank, to a small animal in your back box lol sorry, couldnt help unless i was thier to av a look
"couldnt help unless i was thier to av a look" Cornwall is not that far lol! thanx i apreciate it alot. The garage that told her to buy a new ECU did try resetting it twice ( i was told by her) but i was not there so i dont know if they acctully did! ill try and have a look this weekend if i have time.Thanx
the DIY place to start is the ecu reset, and then it's a really simple job to undo the air filter housing, and clean up the throttle body with carb cleaner (halfords do it)
sounds silly, but once upon a time my throttle cable got stuck because I put my aftermarket filter on slightly incorrectly - and it revved at 2k. would be worth checking the cable isn't stuck anywhere.
I agree yeah, clean up ya throttle body 1st. it is possible to reset the basic settings on the throttle body, just ask a vw garage to do that, as a second step. failing that u might be looking at a more indepth problem.
good luck
When I first went to see my Polo and a previous Polo... they said it was idling at 2k cos it wasnt running regularly... but I asked for it to be reset before buying the car... so it couldnt have cost that much... cos they did it for me in the end.
thankyou everyone i was ment to go over and have a look but i dint get the chance. I will try and phone her and see whats the latest. I am not sure if she payed 150 for the ECU yet but thats what the garage was charging.
